French, Circa 1860.
The superb marquetry to this magnificent pair of cabinets juxtaposes colourful and precious timbers in a dazzling foliate arrange of ribbon-tied bouquets and garlands. This type of especially rich foliate marquetry was perfected by a handful of luxury furniture makers working in Paris during the mid-19th century Second Empire period. Foremost among them was Joseph Cremer who specialised in ‘fabrique de marquetrie, mosaique et meubles de luxe’. Cremer supplied King Louis-Philippe, as well as the King of Holland, and worked in conjunction with André Lemoine, warrant holder to Emperor Napoleon III.
