Established in 1988, The European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF) is widely regarded as the world’s preeminent organization for fine art, antiques, and design.bringing together 7,000 years of art history under one roof. Featuring over 260 prestigious dealers from some 20 countries, TEFAF Maastricht is a showcase for the finest art works currently on the market.

One of the highlights of the fair and of our stand was the newly discovered pair of important marble figures of ‘The Pugilists Creugas and Damoxenos’ by Rinaldo Rinaldi (1793-1873), after the models by Antonio Canova (1757-1822).

Of heroic size these magnificent marble statues stand as monumental tributes to the art of classical sculpture, capturing the raw intensity and grace of ancient combat.  Created by none other than Canova’s favourite pupil, Rinaldo Rinaldi, working from Canova’s original plaster models they are the only known second examples executed by a pupil of Canova.

The sculptures follow Canova’s famous marble Pugilists, inspired by the writings of the 2nd-century Greek traveller Pausanias. Canova completed the original works between 1801 and 1806 for the Vatican, where they are displayed in the Octagon Hall of the Pio Clementino Museum.

Showcasing the very best of the 19th century, other highlights of our stand included a spectacular bureau plat featuring outstanding marquetry inlay. Made in England circa 1830–1840 and attributed to Town & Emanuel for Edward Holmes Baldock, it incorporates earlier sixteenth-century marquetry inlay and intarsia work, ascribable to the Augsburg region of Germany.

Also included were rare bronze sculptures by Le Comte de Nieuwerkerke, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Louis-Ernest Barrias, and Sir William Hamo Thornycroft, as well as fine decorative objects and clocks.
