description

‘La Cruche Cassee’ - A Fine Pair of Patinated Bronze Figures by Jean-Baptiste Germain.

Inscribed to the bases ‘J.B. Germain’.

Finely cast and modelled and retaining their original patination this fine pair of bronze figures depict a young girl wearing a ribbon tied bodice, firstly standing reflectively holding a broken jug in her arms and secondly with the broken jug at her feet; raised on naturalistic circular bases.

The subject is inspired by the celebrated painting ‘La Cruche Cassee’, commissioned by the Countess du Barry, favourite of Louis XV and painted in 1771 by Jean-Baptiste Greuze, now in the collection of the Louvre (INV 5036).

French, Circa 1890.
