description

An Oval Banded Red Agate Dish With Gilt-Bronze Chimera Handles.

The oval dish is formed from an exceptionally fine banded agate, with striking lacy striations in white and orange against a saturated flame-red background. The dish is mounted with gilt-bronze handles finely cast as Chimera and raised on a gilt-bronze base, with further Chimera figures forming the feet.

The appreciation which has always surrounded agate and other precious stones has led, since ancient times to their use in beautiful decorative items. Often they were combined with fine metalwork mounts both as protection for the delicate edges of the stone and as a rich and elaborate embellishment. The mounts frequently take the sculptural form of human figures, animals or mythological elements.

Agate is a type of quartz. Most agates occur in the cavities of volcanic rocks or ancient lava. Many agates, when cut in cross-section, reveal striking forms and intense colours such as in this wonderful and rare dish.
