James Murray

James Murray (1780-1847) was a fine chronometer maker, born in Moffat, Scotland. He became a Liveryman of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1817 and went into business with Charles Strachan in 1816-1825. After Murray’s death the firm was continued by his sons James and John. The business is recorded in London at 30 Cornhill (1840-1865) and 1 Royal Exchange (1872-1900). James, the younger, afterwards went to India in 1883 where he established a successful business at 11 Dalhousie Square, Calcutta where he died in 1892.
