Chiparus, Dimitri (Demetre)

Dimitri Chiparus was born in Romania in the late nineteenth century. In 1909 he went to Italy, where he attended the classes of Italian sculptor Raffaello Romanelli, and then in 1912 he traveled to Paris to attend the Ecole des Beaux Arts to pursue his art at the classes of Antonin Mercie and Jean Boucher. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1914 to 1928.

Chiparus developed the chryselephantine bronze, pioneered in Belgium at the turn of the century, and gave it its peculiarly Art Deco flavour. He produced numerous statuettes and small groups of girls, their features carved in ivory set into the bronze which was often chased, gilded and enamelled. His sculptures are remarkable for their bright and outstanding decorative effect.

The mature style of Chiparus took shape in the 1920s. Dancers of the Russian Ballet, French theatre, and early motion pictures were among his more notable subjects and were typified by a long, slender, stylized appearance. His work was also influenced by an interest in Egypt, after Pharaoh Tutankhamen’s tomb was excavated.

Like many artists he had a particular gift for portraying children and his work in this field covers a whole range of childish pursuits.
