Description

An Unusual Pair of George III Style Cut-Glass and Gilt-Bronze Mounted Two-Light Candelabra With Wedgwood Sage Green Jasperware Bases.

The bases stamped beneath the bronze mounts ‘Wedgwood’.

Each candelabra has a Wedgwood sage green Jasperware drum base with neo-classical scenes. The drum is surmounted by a gilt-bronze dome and a knurled ring supporting a glass bowl issuing two ‘S’-shaped faceted candle arms with Van Dyke drip trays and nozzles, together with a pair of Shepherds crooks, of typical scrolling form, and a central tapering spire. The shepherds crooks and candle arms are united by festoons of graduated pear shaped drops around the central spire which is surmounted by a shaped canopy and unusual cut glass Crescent moon finial. The addition of the cut glass Crescent moon finials suggests that this pair of candelabra may possibly have been intended for the Turkish or the Middle Eastern market.
