Description

A Fine Louis XV Style Wrought Iron and Parcel Gilt Console d’Applique With a Rouge de Rance Marble Top.

This important Louis XV style console d’applique has a moulded, shaped Rouge de Rance marble top above a conformingly shaped frieze of viruvian scroll and acanthus, centred by a large plamette, above scrolling open work legs, united by a stretcher, and terminating in scrolled foliate wrapped feet.

Conceived in the Louis XV Rococo style this elegant console references the magnificent ‘console d’appliques’, or ‘console d’apparats’ made in the 18th century by ambitious artisans belonging to the guild of the ‘serruriers-ferroniers’ who specialised in works for architectural schemes. The complexity and difficulty of such work means examples are very rare. Two centres of production emerged in late 18th century France, one in Paris under the leadership of Pierre Deumier ‘serrurier des Bâtiments du roi’ and the other in Provence in Comtat Venaisisn. Parisian artisans favoured polished steel and less rocaille forms while in contrast Provençal production tended to be more exuberant and baroque, given the proximity of nearby Italy.
