description

A Magnificent and Important Pair of Palatial Giltwood Console Tables with Verde Antico Marble Tops.

This exceptional pair of giltwood console tables each have rectangular verde antico marble tops supported by expressive and finely carved putti holding foliate garlands. The playful putti grasp onto with one hand, and are balanced on, exuberant acanthus carved 'C' and 'S' scrolls of massive proportion terminating in exuberant twisting feet of fronded acanthus scrolls.

These console tables are distinguished not only by the grandeur of their size but by the wonderful translation of playful and energetic rococo elements into a scheme that otherwise conveys all the solidity and splendour of the most robust Baroque furniture. The massive twisting and turning acanthus scrolls achieve a dynamic tension which instils the consoles with a sense of verve and vivacity which exemplifies the best of the rococo revival in the nineteenth century.
