John Charles Maggs (1819-1896) was a famous Bath coaching painter. He ran a school of painting at 34 Gay Street in Bath, and despite never exhibiting in London he was widely patronised by lovers of coaching, including Queen Victoria.
Maggs carried the tradition of coaching painting well into the railway age, and was particularly fond of painting coaches in snow. His paintings were particularly highly regarded for their detail and realistic depiction of life.
