Description
A Pair of Venetian Rococo Carved Giltwood Mirrors.
These mirrors have elaborate pierced strapwork crestings surmounted by a shell-shaped corona above a cartouche-shaped plate, the rectangular mirror plates within a carved giltwood and gilt-gesso embossed frame boarded by conforming rocaillie ornament. The mirror plates are lightly and attractively speckled as becoming of age.
Italian, Mid-18th Century.
Mirrors were highly sought-after luxury items and Venice was an important centre of mirror production. The tiny Venetian Island of Murano was known as the “Isle of Glass” and the epicentre of the art of glassmaking.
