وصف

A Set of Sixteen George III and Later Giltwood Dining Chairs
The two armchairs and ten of the side chairs circa 1780, possibly by an émigré craftsman. The remaining four side chairs made en suite in the 19th century.

This fine set of giltwood dining chairs comprises a pair of armchairs and fourteen side chairs.

The oval padded back encircled by a channelled and ribbon carved frame. The waved seat rail and upright support to the armchairs similarly carved. The anthemion leg blocks above stop-fluted and acanthus carved legs.

These ‘Salon Chairs’ are conceived in the French Antique fashion of the Louis XVI style which was adopted in England in the 1770s notably by the Berkeley Square cabinetmaker John Linnell (1729–96), who had studied French ornament at the St. Martin’s Lane Academy, and Mayhew & Ince who supplied Francophile clients through the architect Henry Holland (1745-1806). Both Linnell and Mayhew & Ince employed émigré craftsman, and the unusual design of these chairs, particularly the waved seat rail, suggests a foreign hand.

Offered in good unrestored condition. One armchair and one side chair have been reupholstered in green velour so as to give an idea of how the set might look after restoration. The set can be upholstered in a material of your choosing. Please enquire for the price inclusive of restoration and upholstery.
