From the early 1700s, porcelain production in Staffordshire flourished as several towns opened potteries because of its close proximity to Devonshire clay, the availability of major water and land transport, turning the area into a centre of artistic ceramic production. It was during this century that the area, which had already been associated with porcelain production, saw further growth with the innovation of grinding flint in water, and as now world-renowned names began to work in the area such as Wedgwood, Spode, and Minton.
