Mathilde Thomas-Soyer (1858-1940) was born in Troyers, France on August 19th 1858. The daughter of a French Magistrate she studied sculpture under Auguste Cain and Henri Michel Chapu.

Focusing on animalier subjects, and in particular dogs, she become along with Rosa Bonheur one of the most successful female sculptors of the period. She exhibited for the first time at the Paris Salon in 1879 and a small number of her figures were published in bronze by the Parisian foundry Thiébaut Frères and retailed by Tiffany & Co.
