A Highly Important Patinated Bronze and Sienna Marble Fireplace of Impressive Proportions with finely cast bronze panels and classical figures depicting 'Printemps' and 'Automne'.
This magnificent Fireplace has a moulded mantle shelf with an applied bronze vitruvian scroll running pattern above a patinated bronze frieze. The central panel of the frieze depicts playful putti cast in high relief flanked to each side by panels containing putti supporting armorial cartouches. It is supported by architectural jambs in the form of pilasters headed by bronze Corinthian capitals framing niches containing finely modelled classical figures of maidens holding flowers and berries cast in the round representing Spring and Autumn. The jambs are raised on corresponding bronze mounted plinths and put down on a marble base plate.
The fire aperture is framed by a wide bronze meandering vine border and opens to an ornamented fireback cast with scrolling acanthus and centred by a cartouche.
The fireplace for centuries has played an important role in providing the 'Focal Point' for a room. Often in the past a fireplace was designed to harmonise with the architectural and decorative scheme of a room creating a unified whole. Today the introduction of a grand architectural fireplace, especially if sculpted in marble, or as in this example marble and bronze, still provides a sense of style and opulence to any room.
